Our mission
It is possible to learn Korean through self-study; with the spread of social media, we never have to learn alone.
One of the best ways that I learned Korean was through song translation – and I don’t mean simply looking at English versions of the songs (especially because I don’t always think they’re 100% accurate). I broke up every single sentence down to a phrase, phrase down to a word, and words down to pieces. Breaking each word into parts made it possible to plug different words into sentences to communicate my thoughts in Korean.
Our mission is to create a community of practice within the K-pop community. I want everyone to have an outlet they can lean on when they want to learn Korean – the fun way! I vow to provide quality, reliable information to really teach you Korean through song, but I also ask that you participate! If you have a better way of explaining something, let me know! If you want to change something I’ve written down, email me! Whatever contributions I have from other readers/member of this community, I would be glad to give you credit for your revisions. I’m not here with claims of being fluent; I’m here to build a friendship among the like-minded. Join me in the expansion of our knowledge and vocabulary with your favorite, popular songs.
Weekly Song Study: Each week Kp2kt will post a song study in 4 parts that will appear on Monday, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays. Keep up to date with the blog to learn a new song and finish it with us throughout the week!
Wordly Reminders: Every other week, Kp2kt will introduce a word that is commonly used within K-pop songs through our YouTube series named Wordly Reminder. You can find us at www.youtube.com/kp2ktNfrans. In these videos, we introduce a word and multiple phrases from different songs within the K-pop genre. We will then discuss the multiple ways the word is used in our examples.
Let’s become friends and learn Korean together!
Tidbit: Why song translation works?
This method is sure to work, thanks to the simple way our brains work: repetition! We all know how easily K-pop songs get stuck in our heads and replay - whether we like or not. Learning the actual words to the songs instead of mumbling what we think we hear is a great tool to getting the words to stick in your head just as much as the songs do! And, the more you listen to a song, the more you understand the pronunciation of the words spoken by a native speaker - you'll hear it clearer and clearer each time!
