여러분 안녕하세요 ~ I hope everyone is having a great week so far!
Today we will begin Part 2 of S.M. The Ballad's Breath!
Keep in mind that this is going to be the longest part of this song; we are covering Taeyeon's part along with the CHORUS! We've got lots to cover, but don't forget to have fun singing!
Let's get started!

Lesson. 시작합시다!
너무 놀라서 말이 나오지도 않았어
너무 means too, or so. 놀라다 means to be surprised, and or shocked. Attached to the present tense of the verb (놀라), the grammar structure added afterwards is -서, which means so or because. So, 너무 놀라서 - I was so shocked so, or because I was so shocked. 말 means words, and attached to 말 is 이, a subject marker - marking words as the subject of the sentence, or in other words, the words are the thing DOING the verb. 말이 나오다 [to come out] means that words come out (leave your mouth). Added onto the verb stem 나오 is the grammar structure 지 않다 which means NOT. So, 말이 나오지 않다 means that the words DO NOT come out. However, we have another structure -도 that is attached in between the -지 and the 않다. -도 usually gives the meaning of too, also, or even. And after the 않다 is the past tense form (않 + 았어) which changes do not come to DID not come. So you can think of it as, words didn't even come out/I couldn't speak (because of how shocked I was).
떨리는 가슴만 붙잡았어
떨리다 means to shake or tremble. In this case, the verb stem 떨리 has been transformed into the descriptive verb form (+는) to describe the noun afterwards - 가슴 [heart]. So, a trembling/shaking heart. Attached to 가슴 is the grammar structure -만 which means only. 붙잡다 means to grab or hold (something), and this verb is changed into past tense (붙잡 + 았어). So the sentence means, she grabbed only her trembling heart, or she grabbed at her trembling chest (area/clothes).
많이 힘든지 지금 어디 있는지
많이 is derived by the verb 많다 which means a lot or very. 힘들다 means to be hard, or difficult. Attached to 힘드 (ㄹ is probably omitted for pronunciation purposes) is the grammar structure -ㄴ/는지 that means whether or not (verb). 많이 힘든지 means whether or not it was very hard. 지금 means now, and 어디 means where. 있다 is a verb meaning to exist, and attached to the verb stem (있) is the -는지 grammar structure again. So, right now, where (do you exist) are you? // Whether your here, nor there.
묻기도 전에 눈물이 흘렸어
묻다 means to ask, attached to the verb stem is -기 which turns the verb to ask into noun form, so you can then add -도. -도 in this format means to even (do verb). So, to even ask is 묻기도. 전 means before, and 에 is a particle that means in, at, or to. Here, the particle is marking the time as BEFORE (in English, it doesn't really makes sense to add any of those three words to before, but it is essentially marking the time). So, 묻기도 전에 means before I could even ask (those questions she named). 눈물 means tears, and attached to 눈물 is 이 the subject marker - marking tears as the thing DOING the verb - 흘리다 to cry, to shed. 흘리다 is then transformed into past tense (흘리 + 었어). So, before I could even ask (those questions) I began to cry/shed tears.
네 숨소리만 들려도 그래
네 is equivalent to the word 니 which means you or your. 숨소리 means breath, or sigh. Attached is the grammar structure 만 once again that means ONLY. 니 숨소리만 means only your sigh. 들리다 means to be heard. Present tense form + -도 is added to the verb 들리다 (들리 + 어도) which means even to hear (just/only your sigh). 그래 is the present tense version of the verb 그렇다 which means to be like THAT. So, even only hearing your sigh, I'm like that. // All that happened just after hearing your sigh.
눈물이 이렇게 흘러내리면
눈물 [tears] is attached to a subject marker 이 again, marking 눈물 as the one doing the verb. 이렇게 means like this (derived from the verb 이렇다 - to be like THIS). 흘러내리다 means to fall down. So, 눈물이 이렇게 흘러내라다 means "the tears fall down like this." Attached to the verb stem ending of 내리 is the grammar structure -면 which means IF (if the tears are falling down like this).
아끼던 내 작은 추억들마저도
아끼다 is a verb meaning to cherish. -던 is another way to change a verb into a descriptive word (similar to adding -는) but it puts emphasis on the past. So something that WAS cherished. 내 means my (나 [me] + 의 [possession marker]). 작다 means to be small, and here is is turned into a descriptive word (+은) that is describing 추억 [memories]. The particle -들 that is attached to 추어 is just putting emphasis on the fact that we are talking about multiple memories. So, so far we have my small memories that I cherished. Attached to 추억들 is the structure 마저 (for those who know, this expression is similar to -까지), 마저 means up to the very last, or down to the very smallest memory in this case. The attached -도 means even, or too. So, even down to my smallest memories that I used to cherish... (sentence continues on next line).
어쩔 줄 몰라
어쩌다 seems to be a phrase meaning somehow, or what to do. Lots of times you'll hear it in the form of 어쩌라고 (what am I to do?) or 어쩔 수 없어 (there is nothing we can do, nothing to be done, it can't be helped). 어쩔 줄 몰라 means to not know what to do. So, together: When I cry like this, even my smallest memories that I cherished don't know what to do. I don't know what to do about them.
너무 아파서 서로 놓아주길 약속했지만
Again here we have 너무 which means too, or so. 아파다 means to be hurt, or to hurt. Attached to the present tense form (아파) is the grammar structure -서 again - meaning so, or because. 너무 아파서 means because it hurts, or it hurt, so... 서로 means each other, and the verb 놓아주다 means to release something (as a favor). The verb stem 놓아주 is then changed into a noun by adding -기 and then 를 and object marker is added to the end of the word - so to release becomes the object of the verb to come - 약속하다 [to promise]. So, what did we promise? To release each other. 약속하다 is turned into the past tense form 약속했다 and then the grammar structure -지만 is added to the verb stem [약속했] to mean, BUT. It's translated to: it hurts, so we promised to release each other (let go of each other), but...
자신 없을 때
자신 means confidence. 없다 means to not exist. 자신 없다 means to not have confidence. The grammar structure added to the verb stem of 없 is -을 때. When a verb stem is attached to -을 때, it means WHEN verb. So, 자신 없을 때 means WHEN I don't have confidence.
가끔 숨소리라도 들려주길
가끔 means sometimes, and 숨소리 means breath. 라도 is an attachment that can mean, at least THIS will also do. So 숨소리라도 means, if nothing else...just your sigh. 들려주다 means to allow something to be heard, have something be heard (as a favor). Added to the verb stem (들려주) is -기 transforming the verb into noun format, with an added object marker (ㄹ). So, when I don't have confidence, sometimes if you just allow me to just hear your sigh (it is implied that at least THIS would make you feel better).
