Hey Everyone!
Welcome to S.M. the Ballad's Breath Part 1!
So, much like 2NE1's song again, this week's part 1 (and part 3) are going to be rather short, while part 2 is going to be a bit lengthy. Like before, I want to separate the song into four pieces that break up nicely, and this is how it has turned out.Good luck and remember to have fun singing!
Let's get started!
Nouns 나 - me 너 - you 전화 - phone 참 - really/extremely/quite 오랜만 - a long time 힘 - strength 것 - thing 후회 - regret 한숨 - sigh/long breath | adverbs 너무 - too/so grammar -고 말다 -(present tense) 서 -도 -만 -기 | verbs/adj 이다 - to be/"is" 들다 - hold/take/pick-up/carry 힘들다 - to be hard/tiring/difficult 잡다 - to catch/capture 미안하다 - to be sorry 보내다 - to send 되다 - be/become/get to be 쉬다 - to rest 모르게 - unknowingly |
Lesson. 시작합시다.
Here, 나 [me] is connected to a particle -도. The particle -도 means too, or also - 나도 is me, too! 모르게 means unknowingly, or unaware (of a certain action/verb). Attached to 전화 [phone] is an object marker, which marks the PHONE as the object of the verb to come 들다 - to hold/pick-up. What are we holding/picking up? The object - 전화 [phone]. So, so far we have I, too, unknowingly picked up the phone (without much thought). The grammar structure -고 말다 (similar to the expression 버리다) expresses when one ends up doing something - it applies that you know the story behind was has happened (there is some background to the statement). For more examples using -고 말다, click here.
나야...참 오랜만이야
나 [me] + the verb 이다 which means it is, together, makes 나이다 (It is me). The verb 이다 here is changed into the present tense, INFORMAL (반말) ending, 이야 (The 이 is omitted). 나야 means, it's me. 참 means very, or extremely. 오랜만 means a long time, and is followed here by the verb +이다 ["it is]. And again, it is in present INFORMAL tense. 참 오랜만이야 is literally, it is a long time, but sounds more natural in English, it's been a really long time.
너무 힘이 들어서 잡기도 미안해서
너무 means too, or so. 힘이 들다 (also known as 힘들다) means to be hard or difficult. Attached to the present tense of the verb stem 들다 is the grammar structure -서 (들 + 어서). You can think of 서 just like it sounds, it was hard so, or you can think of it as because - like, because it was hard. 잡기도 is a structure made from 잡다 [to catch], -기 changing a verb into noun form, and -도 which in this case, adds emphasis. The verb stem 잡 is then attached to -기 which does not change the meaning. 잡기 means to catch as well. Adding -도 (the usual meaning of too, or also) can add the meaning of, to EVEN catch, or to ALSO catch. 미안하다 means to be sorry, so 잡기도 미안하다 means to catch you/hold you (back), I am sorry. Here again, we have the grammar structure (present tense) + 서 (미안하 + 여서 = 미안해서) that means because. So together, because it was too hard, and because I was sorry to (catch you/hold onto you) hold you back...
너를 보낸 게 후회돼서 한숨만 쉬는걸
너 [you] + the object marker 를 is marking YOU as the object of the verb to come 보내다 which means to send. 너를 보내다 means to send YOU (or in break-up terms, to give you up). The ㄴ connected to the verb stem 보내 is turning the verb into a past tense descriptive word to describe 게 [thing]. 너를 보낸 게 Sending you - this thing - the fact that I SENT you. 후회 [regret] 되다 - to come to regret. Again, attached to this 되 verb stem is the present tense + 서 form (돼 + 서) - because I've come to regret this (regret what?) sending you away/letting you go. 한숨 [sigh] + the grammar structure -만 which means only. 쉬다 original means to rest; however, 한숨 쉬다 means to let out a sigh. So, 한숨만 쉬다 means to ONLY let out a sigh. Attached to the ending verb stem 쉬 is -는걸 (것 [thing] + 을 object marker) which changes the verb 쉬다 to describe 것 [thing] in the present tense. So, I can only sigh (because of my regret).
