Welcome to Part 2!
I'm just going to say that since I've been translating this song, I can't stop listening to it! It's proving to be one of those songs that can change your mood to better, no matter what! Perfect song to learn with! Today we will cover the chorus! Yay!
Of course, have fun singing!
Let's get started!
Nouns 도대체 - "what/who/where/why in the world!!" 나 - me/I 것 - thing 커피 - coffee 가슴 - heart/chest 두근 - "thump thump" heartbeat sound 입술- lips 너 - you 아니면 - If not... | Adverbs 왜 - why 같이 - together 아마도 - maybe 자꾸만 - keep on, repeatedly (on and on) 또 - again Grammar -은/는지 -때문 -고 | Verbs/Adj 이렇다 - to be like this 마시다 - to drink 이다 - to be/"is" 대다 - "ing" (explained below) 바싹 말라오다 - to dry up (completely) 그 - that (adjective) "something" |
Lesson.
도대체 means like "what the!" or similar to the English expression "what/why/how/where in the world!" 나 means me, and 왜 means why! 이런 is the descriptive version (+ㄴ) of the verb 이렇다 which means to be like THIS. It it describing the noun 것 [thing]. 이런 거 means like, a thing like this. Then the grammar structure -은지 is added. -은지 is often used with the English expression "whether or not." In this song, it's used in a way of listing options and wonder. For example, whether or not it's the caffeine, whether or not it's the "blank blank". WHAT IS IT!! :) So, this sentence is translated to: WHY in the WORLD am I like this?
같이 마신 커피 때문인 건지
같이 means together. 마신 is the descriptive form (+ㄴ) of the verb 마시다 [to drink] - it is describing 커피 [coffee]. **It is important to know that when turning action verbs into the descriptive form, in present tense you add -는, in past tense you add -은, and future tense you add, -ㄹ. For example, 마시는 커피 is coffee one is drinking (present). 마신 커피 is coffee one has drank (past), and 마실 커피 is coffee you will drink, or coffee to drink (future). So in this case, it is in the past tense! For the next word, in case you don't remember from the last part: the next word is somewhat of a grammatical structure, using - 때문 after a noun gives the meaning of BECAUSE (noun). 때문 is often paired with the verb - 이다 [to be/"is"]. So, 커피 때문이다 means it is because of the coffee. The verb 이다 is then transformed into the descriptive form (+은) to describe 것 [thing]. Then again, we have the grammatical structure -은지 to expression whether or not and wonder. So, this sentence can be translated to: Is it because we DRANK coffee together??
그건 아마도
그 means that and is attached to 것 which means thing (+ㄴ is marking the topic) - although technically translated to that thing, you can just think of it as that. 아마도 means maybe. So, it's maybe that.
________________________
자꾸만 가슴이 두근대고
자꾸만 means repeatedly, or again and again (+만 is emphasis on OVER and OVER, unstopping). 가슴 means heart, and attached is the subject marker, indicating that 가슴 is the one doing the verb, in this case - 두근 [heart sound, "thump"] 대다. The verb used at the end, 대 is derived from 대다 - similar to 거리다/하고 있다. Like an "ing" verb. So, my heart keeps (unstoppingly) thumping.
입술이 바짝 또 말라오는 게
입술 means lips, and is marked by 이 the subject marker, telling us that 입술 is the thing that is DOING the verb - 바짝 말라오다 to be dry (completely). Inside this verb phrase is 또 which means again. 말라오다 is changed into descriptive form (+는) to then describe 것 [thing]. It appears as 게 because it is a combination of 것 + 이 [a subject marker], making the entire sentence into a separate clause. So, the entire sentence becomes the subject of the next sentence. So, my lips becoming completely dry IS...
너 때문인 건지
Because of you (I'm debating whether or not)! 너[you] + 때문이다 [is it because of] + 건지 [whether or not]. So, (whether or not) you are the reason for my lips becoming completely dry. Just a repetition of early grammar structures.
아니면 커피 때문인 건지
아니면 [a mixture of 아니다 to be "not," and -면 IF] means If not... 커피 [coffee] + 때문이다 [is it because of] + 건지 [whether or not]. If it's not because of you, then (whether or not) it's because of the coffee??
Reading/Comprehension.
도대체 나 왜 이런 건지 같이 마신 커피 때문인 건지 그건 아마도 카페인 때문인 걸까 너의 폐인이 돼버린 걸까 | 자꾸만 가슴이 두근대고 입술이 바짝 또 말라오는 게 너 때문인 건지 아니면 커피 때문인 건지 |
Can I just admit that I'm absolutely obsessed with this song? It's so upbeat! How can you not love it?!
