This weeks Travel Korea brings us to a spot that's very special in our hearts.
As many of you know, both Bria and I (Alba) studied at Korea University for a semester. Our regular spot holds so many wonderful memories for us and we wanted to share it with you. We hope that you'll make as many wonderful memories as we did here.
So without further adieu, let's travel to 가오가 (ka-oh-ga), located in 안암 (Anam), 서울 by Korea University! (Second Floor)

So without further adieu, let's travel to 가오가 (ka-oh-ga), located in 안암 (Anam), 서울 by Korea University! (Second Floor)
가오가 is a restaurant/ Korean style bar located in 안암 (I'm pretty sure there are others in different locations). Either way, 가오가 is what we like to call, "The Treasure of 안암."
Why do we call it like that? The reason is because not a lot of people know about it, and it feels like when you find out about it, it's an initiation! We found out about it through Korea University's KUBA (Korea University Buddy Assistant) group that brought us there for drinks. They showed us this precious gem, and we ended up showing others (both foreigners and Native students) this restaurant.

Now to us, 가오가 was super comfortable and relaxing. You guys might not believe it based on the picture to the right, but it was! Inside the restaurant, the lighting was a little dark, but they put up Christmas lights to balance it out. Even though there are cement walls inside, they had permanent markers ready so that you could sign your name and leave a note on it! It was, overall, really precious the little additions they had. Like we said before, 가오가 is a Korean Style Bar. So, what does that mean? It means that you and your group have your own space. Side note, don't think that it's a "bar" bar-- you won't be finding mixed drinks or vodka there, just different types of 소주. Unlike American bars where you go out to meet people, Korean bars tend to be a place where friends catch up and hangout. But don't think you won't meet new people! You definitely will; trust us. Each table has an orange cover that if you feel like you don't have enough privacy, you can just pull it down. | Our spot was the table on the other side of the wall. Not the circle one, the long table! |
But enough about the insides; let's get to the best part-- Food. The food there is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Like, wow! Though... we never really strayed far from our usual choice. Nonetheless, what we always got was delicious.
What we got was called "1970엣날통닭" which was pretty much just a whole cooked chicken. With a side of rice it's even better. That is our recommendation on what to get! There other things as well, so don't worry too much. They offer different styled cooked chicken, seafood, soups, and more!
But, I need everyone to be extremely careful. If you don't know how to read or speak much Korean, it can be a little difficult. The workers (when we were there) didn't speak any English, which really wasn't too bad. The bad part came when reading the menu. The menu was in full Korean (which is why we never strayed from our 1970 chicken). The only word of advice I want to give you is when you see "똥" on the menu, it could have "BEST" right next to it, just... get ready for some sort of intestines! ㅋㅋㅋ(똥 literally means poop)
Overall, 가오가 is the place you want to go for good food, mood, and people. Prices are great and the 소주 is cold; it just makes sense to stop in!
And just for some quick directions. When you reach 안암역 (Anam Station), exit out of exit 3 or 4. If you exit out of 4, you'll be up a small hill so just walk back down it and take the first right. If you exit from 3, turn around and head towards the hill where exit 4 is; take the first left before the hill. From there you need to just walk straight for about 2-3 blocks and it will be on your right hand side on the second floor.
Anyway, if any of you guys have gone, what were your experiences? Did you like it as much as we did? We hope you did! And for those travelling or planning on going, stop by! You won't regret it we promise~
